MP3: Dead Prez - Hip Hop (Diplo Thing)

May 9, 2008 by criticalacclaim

You just can’t stop this guy. Every time I go a few weeks without hearing a new Diplo remix, things just aren’t the same…and then he comes back out of no where with something insane like this. It looks like Diplo is really putting that new studio/mausoleum to good use. He’ll be on the road this summer though so check him out if any of these shows are near you.

MP3: Weezer - The Greatest Man In The World

May 8, 2008 by criticalacclaim

So a few tracks from the new Weezer album leaked today and this one definitely stands out from the rest. “The Greatest Man In the World (Variations On A Shaker Hymn)” sounds a lot like material from Weezer’s Blue Album/Pinkerton era, which many fans will tell you are their best two albums. The other new material sounds great too, but I’m encouraging you all to go out and pick up The Red Album on June 24, so I’m not going to post too much more about this one. However, I do encourage you to crank up “The Greatest Man In The World” and rock out like it’s 1994.

MP3: Surkin - White Night Two

May 6, 2008 by criticalacclaim

This track is from Surkin’s Next of Kin EP, which was just released a few weeks ago on Institubes. I’ve been listening to the EP quite a bit recently and though this EP was released on Institubes, it should definitely please all the Ed Banger fans out there too, given the noticeable similarities between Surkin and artists like Mr. Oizo. However, I think fans of 90s house will probably dig this too, as there is an unmistakable vintage vibe throughout the entire EP. To me, it’s much more apparent on “White Night Two” and “Kid Gloves” than the title track though. If you’re not a fan of the title track, I still recommend checking this one out. I really wasn’t feeling “Next of Kin” until I heard the rest of the EP and since then, it’s really started to grow on me.

Preview New Albums From No Age and Elvis Costello

May 6, 2008 by criticalacclaim

That’s right. The two biggest releases of the week are currently streaming in their entirety on the web. You can preview No Age’s debut LP Nouns here on their MySpace page and Elvis Costello’s new album Momofuku is now streaming here on the Lost Highway website. The new No Age is highly recommended and even if you didn’t like Weirdo Rippers, I still suggest checking out Nouns, as it sounds quite a bit different from their earlier stuff. All you vinylheads don’t have to wait for your copies of these albums either because they are both in stores today. The CD and digital versions are also available as of today.

By the way, I snagged that pic from Gorilla Vs Bear the other day. It looks like artist/skateboarder Ed Templeton did some artwork for the band, which I think is very cool. Templeton is also the owner of Toy Machine skateboards and he produced one of my favorite skate videos of all time, Toy Machine’s Jump Off A Building, which you should track down and watch at your earliest convenience. Bam Margera is like 16 in that video.

Download: Four Tet - Fader Mix

May 6, 2008 by criticalacclaim

Four Tet just released his new Ringer EP today and last week he gave the Fader this exclusive 30 minute mix, which features his latest single “Ringer” along with 11 other tracks from artists like The Field and Autechre. This is definitely recommended listening if you’re in to spaced out techno and dubstep and the new Four Tet EP is pretty awesome too, so go pick that up while you’re at it. What’s with all these great EPs coming out this spring? Spoon, Animal Collective, Surkin, Four Tet…I don’t know if this constitutes a trend, but I’ll take great music in whatever form it comes in.

MP3: Prince - Creep (Radiohead Cover, Live At Coachella)

May 5, 2008 by criticalacclaim

So there are a bunch of different videos of this on YouTube, but this is one of the first decent audio recordings that I’ve come across for this song. I had no idea Prince jammed this one out for 9 minutes, but I think it sounds amazing and everyone that saw him at Coachella must have been freaking out while this was being performed. It sure sounds like it on the recording, but it doesn’t interfere with the song too bad and you can still get a sense of what it was like to hear one of everyone’s favorite Radiohead songs covered by a rock n roll legend.

Prince - Creep (Radiohead Cover, Live at Coachella)

I got this mp3 from Deaf Indie Elephants, where you can find a few different recordings from Coachella, including sets from Animal Collective, The Raconteurs, Portishead, Stars, Gogol Bordello, DeVotchka, and Tegan and Sara. Largehearted Boy also has quite a collection, which includes sets from Aphex Twin, Mark Ronson, Cold War Kids, Metric, Holy Fuck, MGMT, Roger Waters, and The Verve.

Download: James Pants - Music From The Forest

April 30, 2008 by criticalacclaim

James Pants is a relatively recent signee to the California-based indie hip-hop label Stones Throw, which has been putting out some of my favorite records for a while now. Coincidentally, he also happens to be a former intern at Stones Throw and he will be helping to expand the main genres of the label from hip-hop and R&B in to this experimental new-wave/funk sound that he’s created. His influences on his Myspace page range from T.I. to Can, but personally, I think there quite a few similarities to LCD Soundsystem and the Neptunes as well. You could even make a case for some slight similarities to Animal Collective, but then again, James Pants has essentially created his own unique, modern sound, which makes it difficult to compare him to any other artists out right now. Anyways, Mr. Pants put together the most recent edition of the Stones Throw podcast, titled Music From The Forest, which is now available for download from the Stones Throw website. I’ve been listening to it all morning, so I definitely recommend checking that out, as well as this song “Ka$h” from his debut album Welcome which is out on May 27th.

Video/MP3: Busta Rhymes - Don’t Touch Me (Throw Da Water On Em)

April 30, 2008 by criticalacclaim

I’m loving this new Busta Rhymes track as well as the accompanying video. I can’t say the same for that new track with Linkin Park that’s been floating around the internet. Why? Well…because it’s just awful. But having been a fan of Busta’s since the “Woo Ha” and “Scenario” days, I’m confident that his new album I’m Blessed will only continue his legacy of outlandish videos and crazy rhymes that sound awesome and are still somewhat coherent. No release date has been set for the new album, but it looks like I’m Blessed will be in stores sometime this summer.
